Seismicstuff has developed a rugged cable tester designed specifically for the quick testing of industry standard cables
typically used on seismic sources (both analogue and digital systems).
The tester is a portable rechargable unit that not only tests wire continuity but also for tiny impedance changes
within the cable that are indicative of intermittent open circuits, leakage or where a wire is
partially broken and close to failure. Good continuity in the cable is indicated by an unambiguous green light on the
face of the unit.
The audio output allows a single operator to install the cable tester and then walk along the cable stress testing and
flexing the cable whilst listening for audio feedback from the cable. A good cable should be quiet, any crackling or
noise whilst the cable is being flexed or stressed is indicative of an existing fault or of a
cable that is close to failure.
By giving the operator the ability to isolate and test the cable whilst it is installed in position saves many
hours of unnecessary equipment replacements that typically occur during fault finding as the location of the fault can be
very quickly narrowed down using this tester. The ability to detect intermittent faults is unmatched by any other existing
testing method.
The housing is machined from a single piece of block aluminium with the connector mounted on one end and the face plate with
user controls and indicators the other. The controls are recessed and protected by a large raised lip around the face plate.
The internal batteries allow remote use without external power and the
unit has its own recharging circuitry so the batteries can be recharged whilst remaining inside the unit when the
device is not in use.
A separate cable terminator is supplied that, in most cases, is required to be installed in the other end of the cable
during testing.
